Format: 4 bank letters + 0 + 6 branch chars · e.g. SBIN0001234

What the IFSC Tells You

The 11-character IFSC encodes everything needed for an electronic transfer. The first 4 characters are the bank code — SBIN for SBI, PUNB for PNB (and most ex-OBC/UBI branches), BARB for Bank of Baroda, HDFC for HDFC Bank, ICIC for ICICI. The fifth character is always 0 (zero, reserved for future use). The last 6 are the unique branch identifier. RBI assigns IFSCs centrally and updates them after mergers.

PSU Bank Mergers — IFSC Changes

The 2020 PSU bank consolidation merged many banks; their old IFSCs have been retired. Allahabad Bank → Indian Bank (new IDIB prefix). Oriental Bank of Commerce + United Bank → PNB (use PUNB prefix). Syndicate Bank → Canara Bank (use CNRB). Dena Bank + Vijaya Bank → Bank of Baroda (use BARB). Andhra Bank + Corporation Bank → Union Bank (use UBIN). If a search returns "not found", the most likely reason is that your old branch has been re-IFSC'd.

Using IFSC for Government Transfers

IFSC is required for: salary credit (your office payroll team needs it), DBT subsidies (LPG, PM-KISAN, scholarships), income tax refunds, EPF withdrawal, and NEFT/RTGS transfers from your account. Always verify the IFSC from your most recent cheque or bank app before sharing — outdated IFSCs cause transfer failures and delays. Combine with the Salary Calculator to verify your expected monthly credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IFSC code?
IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character code that uniquely identifies a bank branch in the NEFT/RTGS payment system. Format: 4 letters (bank code, e.g. SBIN) + 0 (always) + 6 characters (branch code). Found on your cheque book, passbook, and bank app.
Where can I find my IFSC code?
Top of your cheque leaf (next to the MICR line), first page of your bank passbook, "Branch Details" section of your bank's mobile app or net banking, or printed on your debit/credit card welcome kit. You can also search by bank+branch on this tool.
What is the difference between IFSC and MICR code?
IFSC (11 chars, alphanumeric) is used for electronic transfers — NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, UPI. MICR (9 digits, numeric) is the magnetic ink code printed at the bottom of cheques, used by banks for clearing physical cheques. Both identify the same branch but for different systems.
Why does my IFSC show "not found"?
Most common: the branch has been merged with another (very common after PSU bank mergers in 2020 — Allahabad → Indian Bank, OBC/UBI → PNB, Syndicate → Canara, etc.). Ask your bank for the new IFSC of the merged branch. Also check for typos — IFSC is case-sensitive in some systems.
Is the data live or cached?
Live, served by Razorpay's open IFSC API (ifsc.razorpay.com) which is updated regularly from RBI sources. Razorpay does not require an API key for this free service. The lookup is fast (typically under 500ms) and accurate.
