How BMI is Calculated

BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated as weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, if you weigh 70 kg and your height is 1.73 m, your BMI is 70 / (1.73 × 1.73) = 23.4, which is in the healthy range. This calculator handles the conversion from feet/inches to centimeters automatically, and shows your category, ideal weight range, and how it compares to government recruitment standards.

Physical Standards for Uniformed Services

For Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, CAPF, SSC GD, and State Police, BMI in the range 18.5–24.9 is mandatory. Underweight or overweight candidates fail the physical standards test (PST). Height minimums vary: Army general candidates need 170 cm, hill-area candidates 165 cm, ST candidates 162.5 cm. Female candidates in SSC GD need 157 cm minimum. Chest measurement applies to males — typically 80 cm unexpanded with 5 cm expansion.

Posts Where BMI Does NOT Apply

BMI and physical standards are not checked for desk-based government jobs — SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS (clerical), Banking (IBPS/SBI PO and Clerk), UPSC Civil Services, Railway clerical posts (Group D applies only to running staff), and most state PSC posts. Only uniformed and field services have height-weight-chest requirements. Use the Age Calculator to check age eligibility and the Salary Calculator for in-hand pay estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI and how is it calculated?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. Formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is considered healthy/normal, below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese.
What is the BMI requirement for Indian Army recruitment?
For Indian Army (Soldier GD, Tradesman, Clerk), BMI must be between 18.5 and 24.9. Underweight (BMI < 18.5) or overweight (BMI > 25) candidates may fail the physical standards test. Height minimum varies by region: 170 cm for general, 165 cm for hill areas.
What is the minimum height for SSC GD Constable?
SSC GD Constable minimum height: 170 cm for male (general), 157 cm for female (general). For ST/hill area candidates, relaxation is given — 162.5 cm for male and 150 cm for female. Chest measurement is also required for male candidates (80 cm unexpanded, 5 cm expansion).
Does BMI matter for SSC CGL, Banking, or UPSC exams?
No. BMI and physical standards are NOT required for SSC CGL, Banking (IBPS/SBI), UPSC Civil Services, Railway clerical posts, or most desk-based government jobs. BMI matters only for uniformed services — Army, Navy, Air Force, Paramilitary (CRPF, BSF, CISF), Police, and SSC GD.
What should I do if my BMI is outside the healthy range?
If underweight (BMI < 18.5): increase calorie intake with protein-rich food and strength training. If overweight (BMI > 25): combine cardio exercise with a calorie deficit. Aim to reach a BMI of 18.5–24.9 well before your physical standards test. Allow 3–6 months for safe healthy weight change.
